ASSESSMENT & TREATMENT OF PTSD
Course Goals:
The goal of this seminar is to provide professionals with the
tools necessary to assess, diagnose and treat PTSD. This seminar is the second
of five courses leading to Certified Traumatologist certification through the
Green Cross Academy of Traumatology. (Course 1: Disaster Mental Health or
Field Traumatology.)
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify the continuum of post-traumatic stress responses
and disorders from the perspective of trauma theory, including dissociative
and complex DESNOS phenomena
- Identify the major symptoms of acute and chronic
post-traumatic disorders, including possible implications for personality
development, occupational and social functioning and altered world view
- Discuss how symptoms of PTSD might be misdiagnosed
- Identify
instruments used to assess disorders associated with traumatic stress and
discuss the potential merits and limitations of each and their effective
utilization
- Understand the utility of phase-oriented treatment with
trauma survivors with an ability to implement a tri-phasic treatment
trajectory
- Compare
and contrast several treatment approaches for PTSD
- Develop
understanding and skills for helping clients to establish inter- and
intra-personal safety, including self-soothing and containment skills
- Understand the theoretical “active ingredients” to
effective trauma treatment
- Understand how the therapist
can effectively employ the “self” as a tool for healing
